What we collect
Emails you send us. If you write to the desk, we receive your email address, name and whatever your message contains. We use this only to read and reply to your letter, and, with your permission, to quote it in an essay.
The letter tool. The tool on our correspondence page runs entirely in your browser. Text you enter is not transmitted to us or stored on our servers.
Server logs. Our hosting provider records technical data such as IP address, browser type and pages requested, for security and to keep the site running. These logs are kept for no longer than 30 days.
Preferences. If you make a cookie choice, it may be stored in your browser's local storage. See our Cookie Policy.
Legal bases
We process correspondence on the basis of our legitimate interest in responding to readers, and server logs on the basis of our legitimate interest in operating a secure website. Where we rely on consent, you may withdraw it at any time.
Sharing
We do not sell personal data. We share it only with service providers who host the site or our email, under contracts requiring them to protect it, or where the law requires us to.
Retention
Correspondence is kept for up to two years and then deleted unless an ongoing conversation requires otherwise.
Your rights
